At our place in Wyoming, the cows would rub on whatever was up for Beverage
sticks. WE put an old tire around each pole (= lots of tires, yes!) It worked ,
the cows quit knocking down the poles.

Here in south Texas, it is a deer problem tearing the wire down at the end
where I had the last 40 feet or so tapered down. Quit tapering the wire at the
ends and it solved the deer problem.

On a related note:
I had planted maybe 30 fruit tree saplings in the side lot. The bucks would rub
the devil out of the little trees trunks; enough to split the bark and kill a
few trees.
Of course the trees were to large to put an old tire around so I put green
fence wire around the trees Say, 12" diam for a 1~2 " trunk. Has cured that
damage.
There have been two occurrences where the buck tried to rub through the fence
wire and got caught in it....and played holy-heck getting loose. One time he
left one antler and a very small part of his skull.
Such is life.
