Jerry, Good Information. The short ground rod does not hold merit in areas with winter frozen earth or the "baked pottery" top soil of summer. A 9 foot ground rod can get down into moisture, and some conductivity. 73 Bruce-K1FZ Here in Alabama we have real red clay.
