There was an extensive article in CQ from SA (Brazil?) several years ago
about some station doing the deep well bit.  Can't remember if it was an
April issue or not.  That would only work well if you were over several
hundred feet of snow/ice and then not sure how well.

OTOH, an electrical contractor here several years ago was hired to put a
lightning protection system around an ammo dump at nearby Fort Riley.  I
think they put in 30 or 40 ft deep ground rods in that limestone based
soil.  Again, I think lightning has large HF components so not sure how
much was gained by that.

You do need lightning grounds, but the RF boost will come from collecting
surface RF.
