That's 100% correct. The earth ground is a waste of time, or 
adding one might even make things worse. What you need is a 
common ground point at the equipment, which should also be 
the safety ground. It doesn't matter if the earth is 
involved for the RF, because it will always be too far away 
and it doesn't mean anything anyway for RF. This is true for 
lightning and RFI at the consumer equipment.
