For my two pennyworth I think timed beacons would be a great advantage.

I use the HF system almost every day, and being a QRPer the stepped power 
levels especially indicative of conditions.

To a degree I will agree they my be unnecessary, but it these days of 
limited time for our hobby for some anything that will save wasted time is 
useful!
