I pounded brass for the US Coast Guard for over 20 years. When we sent
any broadcasts on 500Khz or our working frequencies on MF we had to
turn our bugs, (yes, I held a speed key ticket), down to no more than 20WPM.
The "preferred" speed range was 16-18WPM. This speed was dictated by
much study and made mandatory by regulation (ITU I think).

My thoughts are in step with the professional brass pounders.
