I have been using 1/8" stainless steel aircraft cable with the proper thimbles and clamps. It seems to be a good trade-off between strength, cost and longevity. The local TSC store orders it in on a 500 ft spool (they normally stock the galvanized cable which is OK but it will begin to show rust after about 5 years).
