He is probably correct. See:

The only way the small loop will improve reception  (over
just using an attenuator) is if you have a strong local
groundwave noise in one direction that the loop can null.
Other than that, it is a waste of time.

It takes directivity to reduce noise if noise comes from
more than one direction. A small loop isn't very directive.
