I've used the Ohmite TCH35P TO220-style resistors that are available
through Mouser (page 384 in the current catalog). You can also see
them at their web site by searching for TCH35P-470, which should give
you the 470 Ohm version of the part.
The 25 Watt versions of the part (TBH25P) are a little less
expensive, but I'd pay the extra buck for the higher-power version.
My first TCH35Ps lasted several years. Then, suddenly I lost several
of them in storms. They're robust but not indestructible.
Mouser also has Caddock non-inductive power resistors. The MP930 type
is rated at 250 Volts and 30 Watts. It's also a little less expensive
than the Ohmite.
Surplus Sales of Nebraska has 2 Watt carbons, but their prices are
ridiculous. You might also try Mendelssohn's in Dayton. I think
their web site is MDH.com...or something like that.
Four or five 2 Watt carbons in parallel seems to be the must durable
arrangement. I'd parallel whatever kind of resistor I use.
Finally, I've bought quantities of 2 Watt carbons from MC Howard here
in Austin at very reasonable prices. You might call him at
