Susswasser v. Salzwasser.  

I think the river water isn't such a great conductor.  The entire
work by Beverage relies upon the wave propagating more slowly in 
Earth than it does in the antenna wire.  Also...you may find that
'earth' is really several meters below the surface @ 1.8MHz, and
having it move higher, but not change conductivity much, might not
make all that much difference.

Let's see...higher river water means effectively lower antenna.  As you
lower the beverage, the impedance changes, right?  Maybe you can measure
that to verify the theory??
