Far-fetched as it may sound, the source of the noise may be very
local...like a piece of consumer equipment. About 6 weeks ago, noise was
wiping out a number of local services in the VHF (150 mhz) range as well as
doing a very nasty job on a couple of lowband systems and AM broadcast band.
The problem was traced to a bad FAX MACHINE! What was generating the noise
I do not know-perhaps a switching power supply. With the offending machine
uplugged, the noise disappeared on all the systems. It was 3 miles away from
several of the customers being interfered with, and Industry-Canada
technicians spent no small amount of time locating the source.
I gather from talking to the I/C technicians that there are a lot of
incidents like this, so the source of much of our noise on the low bands as
well as elsewhere may have very humble origins!
