I was interested to see your remarks. As you know, I have offered one
interpretation to your observations during the XZ0A DXpedition. You will
find it in the current (November/December) issue of QEX. Another, shorter
and simpler rendition is in the current issue of The DX Magazine.
In a few words, I argue that ionospheric absorption on 160 meters is
so heavy that signals are trapped completely within the dark hemisphere.
Thus, the classical definition of long-path cannot be fulfilled. Instead,
I argue what you heard on that low dipole were short-path signals that
were scattered from nearby, a skewed path. It had to be longer than
short-path but not comparable to 20,000 km, the classical limit for
long-path.
For those interested in the problem, I urge that they read my complete
remarks, along with supporting ideas and data.
I think the upcoming A61AJ operation will be very interesting and look
forward to learning the results.
