It's no wonder for me because I always found that beverages much shorter
than one wavelength do not work.
You can try other transformer ratios to maximize the energy transfer from
the antenna to the line but I'm quite convinced the short wire, expecially
if not terminated, won't perform else than an odd piece of wire with a
strange impedance (the trasformed impedance of an open line is mainly a
reactive load) and you risk to worsen the situation on 80m where the antenna
instead might work as a beverage.
