occur at sunrise here in VK6.

This morning (23/11/99) I started hearing Europeans from about 25 minutes
before sunrise (the latter is currently about 2104Z at VK6VZ). Although
signals were RST559 at best with me, with heavy QSB to S1, some of my
signal reports were S9, with comments such as "very loud" (from Mike G3SED).

Luckily this phenomenon is very rare - and very frustrating for all
parties. At this end, I could hear a huge pile-up of stations - all peaking
S1 to S2 and basically unreadable, with rare 'strong' signals around S4 to
S5, but with massive QSB.

One characteristic of these openings is that the signals seem come in at at
very high angles. All signals were only audible on my inverted vee at 90'
- totally inaudible on the east-west unterminated Beverage which is usually
a good Rx antenna for Eu.

Steve, VK6VZ
