I received 13 responses to my question about the usefulness of the
external audio DSP units when operating on 160. Thanks for all the
info guys!
Here's some of the points that were made:
Several found that the audio DSP help when used on a "mediocre" radio
(wide filters, lower dynamic range) but after acquiring better equipment
found them to be generally ineffective.
Some found them somewhat useful due to their high noise environments
(man-made noise).
It is generally considered that a good radio with narrow filters, some
kind of receiving antenna, and a good set of ears were FAR MORE
IMPORTANT.
Several also mentioned that they had found a noise & interference
canceler (like the MFJ-1026) to be quite effective, at times, in
improving the S/N ratio of topband signals.
Since the 1026 is less expensive than most of the audio DSP units on
the market, it seems like the way to get the most bang for the buck.
