Jeff, I do not think that your experience is all that rare IF translated
up to 80 and 40M. It is just the intensity of the phenoma that manifested
itself so well down on 160.
My own experiences on 40M  ( 4 el yagi)  and WA1EKV ( now K1KW) with his
former 
3 el 75M yagi all indicate many similar experiences on that greyline
path. Working a normally NW to N station that peaked S to SW was not that
odd.

The wide spread reports now along the East Coast indicate that it was not
an isolated or spot incident.

I also feel that yours and others antenna bearings are not in question or
due to some strange back lobe......

Keep digging...

I would also like to find out if there were any unusual 6 or 2M
conditions anywhere over that possible path(s).
