I am 99 percent convinced that the signal Jeff was receiving was coming
from the south, but 100 percent convinced it didn't travel around the
world.
A 4-square like Jeff uses has positive front-to-back up to pretty high
angles, and at no angle is the back lobe stronger than the front
lobe(negative front-to-back). At 80 degrees elevation it has front-to-back
of close to 0dB, so it is hard to imagine being fooled into thinking that a
signal is coming from the wrong direction, if it is significantly stronger
in one direction.
So, the interesting thing is how do you get a strong signal out of Alaska
in a southern direction? Do you have to invoke a mountain range to get a
strong reflection? Is there a possible ionization gradient at the
terminator that could bring a signal to near vertical incidence, with the
result that a strong reflection would propagate back?
