I used to get this same thing on 80m from W8LT during the 80's. Would
work EI and G at 10 an 11z with the best antenna being a half-square
broadside n/s at 130' between the open end of Ohio Stadium (10db better than
the 800' longwire at 100'). Never had conditions like this however to
compare.
