First, happy t'giving to all.
In preparing for CQWW this weekend, I am going to run some experiments
having to do with small lot antennas on 160. Being in a downtown setting
with 120 x 90 to work with, I have been trying different things to put out a
decent signal without frying too many worms. I currently have a helically
wound short vertical (fiberglass paint pole) 16' tall with top hat and
ground radials (chain link fencing- best I could do without a divorce). I
have a 30' tower of rohn 25 topped with a TH3 tribander but have been
advised against shunt feeding that low a tower on 160. I have an 80 meter
horizontal square loop(squooshed diamond, if you will)up 40 feet fed with
ladder line to a mfj989 tuner.(BTW, this is a low power set up.)
The question: If I short the ends of the ladder line on the loop,
essentially creating a 1/2 wavelength radiator for 160, attach it to the
tuner's long wire post(or balanced line post?), and attach the other post to
my ground network, what kind of pattern are we talking about? A friend
suggested that the antenna handbook remarks this would give me both
horizontal and vertical components, almost acting as a horizontally mounted
vertical...Or should I just fly a 1/4 wave wire on a bunch of mickey mouse
balloons and pray for minimal wind?
I'm looking for a bit of technical explanation from you experienced guys..
Any help appreciated. See you on the bands this weekend.
