Personally, I can confirm a number of skew path readings from various locations.

VK0IR came at about 120 degrees (approximately true short path) to my location
on my ESE beverage, but other 8 land stations swear their peak was closer to 70
degrees. My ENE beverage was not good copy any night for Heard Island.
However, one of the locals had good copy on phased loops to the North East!

>From the Caribbean, quite often New England stations will come in better on an
EU beverage, as upposed to a NNW beverage. Optimum reception would be a
beverage about due north. On the other hand, I have not found Southern Cal or
AZ stations to skew over land. From Curacao, they always came on best off the
back of an unterminated ESE beverage.

Also, I agree with the path sometimes bend to the equator. Some of the former
USSR countries south of zones 16 & 17 can peak nearly due east on 160, 80 and 40
at least around their sunrise from my location in Michigan. (maybe higher bands
as well).
