Dear Topbanders,

I previously posted the G6GM/ZL3GQ record of 11940 miles was equal to
19220 kilometers. I miscalculated -- it's closer to 19215 km (km = miles
x 1.609344). BTW, the late G6GM was battery-powered, as AC was not
brought to his farm until 1957.

I also mentioned that it was a short-path QSO, which was a bad assumption
on my part. During the equinox periods from G to ZL, signals could go
either way. Two prominent 160m DXers of the day (W1BB and G6CJ) always
felt that only short path should be considered.

The ten longest-distance 160m QSOs as of 15 April 1975 included:

 1) G6GM/ZL3GQ 11939.9 mi (19215.3 km) 1955 (G6GM battery powered)

 2) G3ZYY/ZL3RB 11926.6 mi (19194.0 km) 28 Mar 1975
 3) G6GM/ZL3RB 11902.1 mi (19154.5 km) 22 Oct 1954 (both stations
were
                    battery powered.

               Mick's rx was

               a BC-342!)
 4) G3PU/ZL3RB 11881.6 mi (19121.5 km) 24 Mar 1965 (longest 2-way

                fone QSO)
 5) G3CFV/ZL3RB 11863.9 mi (19093.1 km) 13 Mar 1966
 6) G6CJ/Zl3RB 11852.0 mi (19074.0 km) Mar 1975 (old G6CJ QTH)
 7) G3SED/ZL3RB 11838.0 mi (19051.5 km) 8 Mar 1966
 8) G3SZA/ZL3RB 11837.2 mi (19050.2 km) 5 Apr 1975
 9) G3OLI/ZL3RB 11827.3 mi (19034.3 km) 22 Mar 1965
10) G6CJ/ZL3GQ 11804.6 mi (18997.6 km) 1955 (new G6CJ QTH)

Other than G to ZL:

23) JA5DQH/PY2FUS 11719.4 mi (18860.6 km) 1975
30) VK6HD/W1HGT 11616.3 mi (18694.6 km)
31) VK6HD/W1BB/1 11612.4 mi (18688.4 km)
37) DL9KRA/ZL3RB 11534.0 mi (18562.1 km) 3 Apr 1967
41) VK6HD/KV4FZ 11445.6 mi (18419.8 km)
46) PY1RO/VS6DO 10985.7 mi (17679.7 km)
47) KL7HEE/VP8ME 10955.2 mi (17630.7 km) 2xSSB QSO
48) VK6NK/W5RTQ 10583.9 mi (17033.1 km)

One record noted above is the most distant station worked by a USA
station on 160m, held by W1HGT for his QSO with VK6HD sometime before
1976. Again, it is not known whether it was short-path or long-path, but
the distance is 11616 miles (18694 km). W1BB also QSOed VK6HD, but
Stew's distance from Mike was 3.9 miles more than Ralph's!

The distance record for farthest north-to-south 160m QSO is (was?) held
by KL7HEE (Fairbanks) and a VP8ME (Halley Bay, Antarctica) for their
2xSSB QSO -- a distance (between stations) of 10955 miles (17631 km).

Those three 160m records (farthest-world, farthest-USA, farthest
north/south) for QSOs between widely-separated stations were documented
in the May, 1975 issue of "Radio Communication".

More food for thought: who are the current record holders?

73, de Earl, K6SE
