Carlos is member of the executive board of the Heard Island =20
Expedition. Carlos is in particular responsible for the =20
equipment used on Heard island (together with K0IR). Carlos =20
likes to operate 10 - 80 meters, CW and SSB, and will the =20
main operator during the openings to South America.=20

Carlos is a biochemist with Chiron Corporation, with more =20
than 50 technical publications and 2 U.S. patents. He was =20
born and raised in Chile, and has family and professional =20
connections there. For a few years lived in Puerto Rico, =20
where he was licensed with his present Extra Class. He also =20
holds an Extra Class license in Chile, being CE3AQI. After =20
moving to California, he became active in the Northern =20
California Contest Club (NCCC). He was one of the =20
organizers (with KK6EK) of the 1995 Easter Island/Salas y =20
G=F3mez expedition. He personally led the expedition to SyG =20
(XR=D8Z), resulting in a new IOTA (SA-083). =20

John is the pilot station coordinator and pilot station for =20
Europe and Africa.=20

Age: 55, licensed since 1961. Retired (since Sept. 96) =20
professional engineer. Author of technical books and =20
software. Family: XYL Frida, one daughther, Marleen (24). =20
Avid DX-er, contester and home-brewer (antennas and =20
equipment). Holder of 80-meter DXCC award #1 (now 345 =20
countries, needing only 3), holder of 5-band WAZ plaque #1, =20
DXCC 160m (272 countries), 160 m WAS, USCCA (all 3000+ =20
counties), and many contest plaques. Holder of European all =20
time record in CQ WW Phone 80m and in both the CW and the =20
Phone 160 m CQ WW contests. =20
Recently, John participated in WRTC '96 (World Radio Team =20
championship), along with his partner RA3AUU (ON9CIB), =20
finishing 12th non North American team.=20

John loves CW, stands phone, but hates lists. RTTY is a =20
great mode as well! He loves opening his station up for =20
newcomers and young hams to train them in the art of =20
contesting. Responsible as well as QTH for the contest =20
station OT3T, OT4T, OT5T, OT6T and OT7T.=20

amps and all home made antennas: 1/4 wave full-size vert on =20
160, 4-square with elevated rads on 80, 3 el full-size yagi =20
at 30m and 4-square for 40, 5 el (15 m boom) on 20m (at =20

m boom) at 19m, plus an array of 12 Beverages (one every 30 =20
