All true diode parameters concerns with the OEM diodes. I wonder if anyone has investigated if the rigs with failing diodes are left plugged into antenna 24/7? It might be accumulation of wind static or picking up the induction of a nearby lightning stroke that randomly claims a diode "victim".

A possible safety factor could be to place a high value carbon resistor from the coax center to shield, to discharge constantly, any static build up.

That might also work if the rig is operated by a ham who walks over a carpet in the ham shack, and then touches the rig.

A 150 k ohm resistance across the 50 ohm connection is not going to rob much power and in carbon; work well with RF at minimal cost.

What does the group think on that idea?
