If one is to be successful in a crowded market, one has to offer something
that is both different and desirable. Low price helps too :-) There is a
segment of the market that will try almost anything new. I do not know if
it will handle a run of 100 but with this suggestion, it only takes 50
purchasers.
I brought up the phasing, in the context of a revived 599, a few sessions
back.
My suggestion is to bring back the 599 with additional capability of being
tied to a twin, a second 599, for phasing on transmit and receive. This
would require some rework of the the DSP firmware and hardware to handle
signals from the two receive chains and to generate phased transmit.
160/80/40/20 is where it's at for a while.
RX and TX directionality and gain on these bands is not easy on a modest
budget. Look at the DXE NCC-1(2). $500. Look at some of the directional
receive arrays for 160. Look at the work it takes to split a transmit
signal to match phased verticals.
The 599 is a great rig. As is, all the way to the receive board can stay
just the way it is. Maybe some improved solid state switching but otherwise
it's pretty solid without spending a whole lot of money for higher dynamic
range components through the crystal filters. Signals for conversion from
the synth would have to be locked together. The DSP would need a little
more power. Separate RX ports and getting rid of the hash from the back
light supply and it's done. Control wise, the main tuning on one 599 could
control the phasing and the RF gain control manual gain balance(could also
be done in DSP and switchable to manual). Also, the addition of a simple
interface to remote control box.
What do we get for our money?
1. An improved 599.
2. An upgrade path of...buy another for greatly improved RX phasing plus TX
phasing.
3. With a pair, we also get all the power of seperate TX and RX for cross
band and split operation.
4. Something new to the market. Out of the box phasing for TX and RX with
a pair of antennas...or with switching(built into band data output) three,
four, or more. Two of the new Eagles and a pair of verticals and the
average ham can have greatly improved performance on an average suburban
lot with unobtrusive antennas.
5. Offer a remote station control. Putting the system at a remote location
would be a great option. A simple interface on the 599. an external box for
power control, antenna switching, environmental monitoring, and interface
to ethernet or UHF link.
This is my idea for a revived 599.
I would buy one and later another!
