One thing that helps when running the Scout on battery is to minimize voltage drop: Replace the spring-loaded fuse holders in the power cord with holders for the blade-type automotive ATC fuses. Clean the power connectors with Deoxit and make sure they mate tightly.

I have a Scout that I run mobile, really like the little rig. As far as it
getting chirpy, it must have a good solid 13.8 volt power source. Be sure
your power supply is ok. The only trouble I have with mine is when I shut
off the engine in my truck. It only takes a couple of minutes to get
flakey running off the battery only. Good Luck with it.

The quickest way (but probably not the easiest) would be to try someone
else's
known good modules in the Scout and/or try the modules in another
Scout/Argo.
Otherwise, the rig/questionable module(s) may need to just sit and "bake"
in
the RX position to see if something needs a little time to wake up. A
little
more proper contact cleaning with DeOxit might also be in order.

The nice thing is that the Scout architecture isn't "rocket science" so to
speak compared to the current generation of radios and thus is reasonably
easy to troubleshoot/repair....

I am checking out a Scout that has been sitting around the shack of a
local
OT ham with the idea of perhaps
purchasing it. I have not yet put it to a real antenna but did some
checking with a good dummy load and power meter.
On the upper bands (10,15, 20 and sometimes 30m) it will put out full
power
for a while (dits on the keyer, for about 10-15 sec),
then hesitate, signal goes kinda chirpy, then drop down to very low or
nil
power. It seems to be rock solid on 3.5 and 7 MHz.
I did a quickie cleanup of the interface strip but it wasn't all that
thorough.

I am not a electronics tech but can do a few obvious things. Any
suggestions???
