Hey, Billy
This Orion is supposed to have the "add on filter." The sound is as though
the ground for the mic has been lost--heavy hum but with distortion. I have
not had trouble like this in the other microphones I use.

Hi Troy,
Two other ideas ... 1st - there was an "add on" filter board to audio input
of the O-II, yours may or may not already that inside the cabinet ...
2nd ... by "heavy RF" do you mean a loud hum, or lots of distortion or just
a very strange "taking off" when you key the rig with any audio ???
At one time I had a similar challenge ... and finally tracked it down to
ground
loops in how I was powering multiple devices from a common DC supply.
BTW, I am also using a stock Heil Proset with the normal Heil adapter via
a Top Ten DXD and MicroHam Keyer here.
Hope this helps!

I certainly agree. I did open the connector plug and re-checked all. Also,
Bob Heil suggested I connect the mic ground to the connector’s shell. (He
said he was one of the original engineers that helped design the mic circuit
in the first Orion.) So far, nothing has helped. I made sure of continuity
for all connections.
I’ll keep trying.

It might be worth a second look, Troy. Those pins on the solder side of that
8-pin connector are very close and the numbers are not easy to read. it
would be easy to be off by one ... ask me how I know. :))

Ted,
I goofed on what I told you. (A senior problem!) The shield goes to pin 7. I’ll
redo all and see if I can find a mistake.

Troy,
Thanks for the information. On page 9 of my Orion II manual (version 4-
October 2006), in figure 2-3 it shows pins 7 and 8 as the mic connections.
Pin 7 is mic ground and pin 8 is mic +. Pin 6 is shown as PTT +. Pin 5 is
PTT ground. PTT ground and mic ground should be separate. If your mic shield
is connected to pin 6, that could be the problem.
My ProSet is connected via a Top Ten Devices DX Doubler which is cabled to
the mic connector on the Orion. Its pinout is as noted in the Orion manual.
HTH!

Ted,
I homebrewed the adapter. The shield side of the ProSet microphone goes to
pin 6 on the Orion and the center conductor ( ProSet tip of connector) goes
to the Orion pin 8. Using the Ten Tec model 709 microphone I get great
audio.
How is your ProSet connected?

Hi Troy,
Need a bit more information. The Orion II has an 8-pin mic connector and the
Pro Set mic terminates in an 1/8-inch mono plug. I don't understand how it
is connected to the radio. Are you using some sort of an adapter, a Heil
AD-1 maybe?
Are you sure the mic connection is the path of RF ingress and not the
headphone connection? Have you tried a different mic? Have you checked
the bonding of the Orion's chassis to all the other equipment?
I'm using a Heil ProSet with my Orion II without any rfi.

I recently got a Heil Pro Set 6 and tried to use it with the Orion II. The
mic cable is a shield conductor with the center conductor to the tip of a
plug and the case is connected to the shield. This causes the mic to have no
RF shield and the result is heavy RF into the Orion mic input. Does anyone
have a solution? I have tried a FT-240-J toroid, decoupling with a 1:1 600
ohm transfomer and both windings by-passed with .001 caps. The only thing I
can think of is the place shielding con the cable (ugly!). Any help?
