BTW, mini-DIN is a standard.  Just a very awkward one to solder yourself.
If DIN, then use the big ones, not the mini.
BTW, "DIN" is a German standard. 
The letters stand for Deutsche Industrie Norm  (German Industrial Standard).

Oh and used STANDARD connectors for all external interfaces, not these crazy
mini-din connectors that all the non-US rigs use.  Oh and now that I am
thinking of it (the new rigs may already have this), but put a FTDI chip in
the rig so all you need is a USB cord rather than have to count on the
computer either having a COM port or an adapter.  And yes stay with FTDI
since those always work.
