Yes I agree, I suppose I'll have to get rid of my Argonaut 516 , my Scout 555 and my Orion II 566 and get a radio that is computer controlled, doesn't have any knobs or switches, just one big screen. UGH!!!

Since everyone on this list appears to use Flex radios, perhaps it's time to start a real Ten Tec site. My shack is obviously full of junk. Omni's, 509, Corsair II, Orion, etc.

Letting a computer do all the work is not my idea of ham radio.

Yes, and I've done exactly that. My rigs are all K3s. I sold a pair of
FT1000MPs to buy the first one. :)
That said, the last two sentences in the report echoed my comments, in summary - most Hams don't care and will continue to buy what some of you classify as dirty. I would also offer that Hams operating these "Dirty" rigs aren't violating any FCC or statutory regulations.

Oh, but they ARE in violation. FCC Rules clearly state that hams SHALL
use the minimum bandwidth needed for the transmitted mode. ARRL Labs
tests most new rigs when they are introduced. You can find a comparison
of their measurements about 20 of those rigs here.
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__k9yc.com_TXNoise.pdf&d=CwICAg&c=82NFg6qkAwmLf-ElsTDuMzmUibVPgLssK8WcsyJgSiA&r=qLRr3eMSdgHqtZiPnK6NYt_TFH3FwDzD-b4QQg-nAZI&m=ji57IzDxjf5Z54SVsV3tJlrMJWzPWoPoElsr97Ndx2g&s=5AhCUjnVmS6KVM4NshSQpEurll_X_nvf1v1C3lfAst0&e= Their tests clearly show that the K3 is the
cleanest of all mass-produced rigs, and that the Kenwood TS590S is a
close second. The 590S is not an expensive rig, selling for about $1500
last I looked. Those other rigs -- Yaesu and ICOM, use 2-4x the
bandwidth of the K3, and they do that because they are VERY careless
about their design of CW keying!

So it comes down to opinions. Opinions with the only ability to change the status quo is to talk with their pocketbooks. I don't believe the opinions expressed in these forums will do little to sway Yaesu, which seems to be the worst offender according to commentary.

I don't place much credence in opinions, and I almost never express
opinions. When I say something about a technical issue, I am stating
facts as I have taken the time to learn them.

I plan to operate my dirty beasts (Yaesu and Flex) in a multi-station setup later this coming year, we will see what a menace they really are....The Yaesu FTDX 1200 was operated last year with no issues. We will run some tests this year in an effort to identify impacts.

No need to "run some tests" unless you're going to improve on what ARRL
Labs is doing with very expensive and state of the art test gear.

I"m enjoying a late S/N (25xx), which is new to me, and am puzzled about the filters. The manual says there is a 2.4 KH filter (which may be a roofing type but was not called that in the 1980s) and mine also has the optional 1.8 500 Hz and 250 Hz filters. That makes 4 filters with the 3 optional ones installed. I have yet to figure out how to get 4 receiving bandwidths with a panel switch of only 3 positions.

There is a note on Page 3-14 about removing or cutting a jumper on the 1.8 KHz socket if this filter is to be installed. Not sure of the reason to do this.

Page 2-9 of the Corsair II manual clearly explains how the "XTAL" switch
points to the broader three filters of the four in ssb and the narrower
three filters of the four in cw.

I would guess that there's a jumper on the socket so that the receiver will still function if that slot is selected by the XTAL switch, but it wouldn't
be advisable to intentionally select that slot if it's only jumpered.

Over the last eight years I have used and still do, many SDR devices and

I invite interested parties to read the entire latency thread I started
over on the Flex forum:

https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__community.flexradio.com_flexradio_topics_receive-2Dlatency&d=CwICAg&c=82NFg6qkAwmLf-ElsTDuMzmUibVPgLssK8WcsyJgSiA&r=qLRr3eMSdgHqtZiPnK6NYt_TFH3FwDzD-b4QQg-nAZI&m=ji57IzDxjf5Z54SVsV3tJlrMJWzPWoPoElsr97Ndx2g&s=TXfKCavtGfrUHhWF5N8WSq_HXW113nIueBcCh6YV5PM&e=

The bottom line, as far as I can tell, is that Flex engineering made a
clear decision, at this point anyway, of providing only ULTRA steep (i.e.,
vertical) filter slopes resulting in higher latency. I make the argument
that shallower filter slopes are often preferable and should be an option.

When you look at the filter slopes of the Orion (combined xtal roofing
filter plus 199 taps dsp), it's no coincidence that they match the filter
slopes on the Omni VI+ (3 xtal filters in the signal path in cw). The
Elecraft K3 slopes are similar as well. And those somewhat shallower
slopes are what I prefer - they sound better to my ear on cw ragchewing,
and they allow me to hear callers that are slightly off my cq'ing frequency in a contest. The PowerSDR line of SDR's (old Flex and new OpenHPSDR/ANAN)
allow the user to widely adjust the filter slopes, but the new Flex
(SmartSDR) doesn't allow this (yet).

Hello Joe,
I was going to scan your page request from my manual I bought from Ten Tec a
few years ago but find that page 3-34 is missing from this manual also.
Should you find that page somewhere I would appreciate a copy and likewise
should I forage one up I'll send to you. Strange that a new manual copy
would not have that page in it.
Best regards,
