Several years ago I had a similar experience when I was having problems with
my Model 253 Automatic Antenna Coupler (bad vacuum relay). I could have
bought a new coupler / tuner for the cost of repair, parts, shipping, etc.
but the new replacement would have either been manual if TenTec or NOT
TenTec if automatic. Given I had built a band decoder for the 253 to work
with my OMNI-VII and Titan-425, I chose to spend over $600 on a piece of
equipment purchased for $1k in 1991.
Before telling TenTec that I wanted them to order the new replacement vacuum
relay, I considered the 15 plus years of problem free service, the quality
of materials, etc of my model 253 versus the cost of and potential problems
of a new auto-tuner by another manufacturer; I decided that repairing the
253 with a new vacuum relay by the same manufacturer, same specs, etc, would
be MY best choice.

Actually, I think Ten Tec is looking out after your interests here. The cost
to repair an old rig may be more than it is worth on the open market, so you
ought to be aware of that. However, if you want them to, they will work on
that older radio as long as the parts are still available. I had my Paragon
in there a year ago when the particular section that needed repair was more
than I wanted to tangle, and they did the fix promptly and relatively
inexpensively. The radio is worth more to me than the market price, but we
didn't approach that anyway. Before the repair they did caution that it
could get expensive, but I told them to go ahead and they did the job and
returned the radio to me while I was visiting in the area, so that was an
unexpected bonus.
Your comment about this putting you off from buying a new radio is
puzzling...wouldn't the fact that your old radio is expensive to repair, and
you didn't spend that money, be a reason to get a new radio? You'll not find
any manufacturer more willing than Ten Tec to work on their older equipment.

Just received a e mail back from Ten Tec. I was inquiring about sending in
my 544 for some repairs. They said it would cost too much. $110.00 per hour
plus parts and shipping. I had several rigs worked on over the years but
now this prices the service department out of my price range.
I will have to re think my new HF rig purchase. Was almost ready to pull
the trigger on a new radio but will have to wait now.
Just venting. I love all the TT equipment that I have and had had in the
past. Great equipment and user friendly.
