Rick, you might consider an OMNI-VII with a FLEX-1500 sub-receiver using the
N4PY modification. Carl and others have rig control software which will
interface with both radios AND most contest software. See
http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/DDUtilPowerSDRN1MMSkimmerCommander for
my method of interfacing to N1MM (and N1MM+) Contest Logger. While the
FLEX-1500 is a good radio for the panadapter and CWSkimmer using VAC, I much
prefer listening to the OMNI-VII. I've yet to find a weak or strong station
or QRM situation where the FLEX was better for my ears. But the new FLEX is
tempting, unless TenTec unveils something competitive, a 6300 or 6500 may be
my next new radio (keeping the OMNI-VII if its still working) .

GM Barry,
You're right; I did not understand. (sri)
Thought you meant the screen.
In the meantime I have concluded (with Carl's help) that I need two screens
in my ham shack, one for the contest software (which is a must anyway these
days) and another for radio control - unless I have a radio with lots of
knobs.
The Eagle and K3 (single RX) are about the only contest radios I know of
that can perform anywhere near the performance of a Flex 6300. Well maybe
an ANAN.
So it seems to me a great contest radio on a shoestring budget is going to
be an SDR, like it or not.
The good radios with knobs just cost too much.
I shall start saving my pennies towards a 6300, hoping the price comes down
as technology advances.
In the meantime I may get a Tmate2 and a used 1500 just to get my feet wet
with this technology.
I know the 1500 is not particularly good but it's good enough to practice
using in some unimportant contest.
If it turns out I can't cope with this new operating method, I can cut my
losses, sell it, and join the group of old farts that James goes to lunch
with! ;-)

For instance, Barry (a better contester than me) agreed on the knob
point but then went on to say for him it's all about the display. He
wants to see everything within the radio.
In a contest, I also think it's all about the display, but I don't
need to know what's going on in the radio. I know that; I set it up.
I need all the information I can get about what's going on in the
contest.
My screen is so full of contest windows, I don't have any space to
have a window for radio control.
Rick, in case you didn't understand, I was talking about the rig display,
not the computer display. I want the radio itself to display that info.
