Computers have gotten so cheap that they're a commodity. One of the best 
bargains around are refurbished Thinkpads, which are mostly off-lease. 
Not hard to find in the $300 range. That gives you a complete computer, 
including the monitor, with a built-in UPS (battery), a wireless card, 
Ethernet, keyboard, mouse, the whole thing.
If you can't afford Carl's software, there's plenty of free rig control 
and logging software around that works with almost any modern rig.
