I hope Barry is right.
Although we've been through all of this before, we are all a bit farther
down the road than we were a year ago.
I don't have much use for a band scope, but understand and accept that it is
a very necessary option for many, perhaps most. However, IMO, if you want
to keep the size of the radio to a decent size, similar to the OMNI VII,
then there isn't enough room for a big screen AND the rest of the info that
needs to be displayed. There is no sense in having a tiny (useless) display
like on the FTdx-5000.
FEATURES:
. Modular design with a low entry-level price (like the K3)
. Optional 2nd RX
. Optional External Pan-Adapter (like the K3)
. IF output wired to the back panel for d-i-y SDR Pan-Adapters
. DOWNWARD CONVERSION first IF
. Room for ALL roofing filter options (15/6/2.4 kHz + 600/300 Hz).
. Decent sized S-Meter that older OM's can read
. Bright WARNING when in SPLIT mode.
. Dual Keying circuits (2-cable loop, and AMP Key with menu
adjustable lead and hang times)
. ALL Amp keying connections utilize RCA Phono (NOT DIN).
. Separate RF and AF Gain Controls
. Separate RIT Knob (not multi knob)
. RX LINE OUT/IN for pre-selector or Noise Canceller
. EXT RX ANT line with its own reed relay to remove it and ground the
RX antenna in TX mode
. OPTIONAL ATU with memory; SWR 10:1
. Final Amp rated for full power at SWR of 3:1 (at least)- probably
means using 24 or 48v FETS.
. QUIET FAN - I like the external fan solution of the OM7 and OR.
. CAT Interface: if and only if we can get Alex to write an Omni-Rig
driver, I prefer USB. If not, then RS-232.
. NIC interface (for remoting)
. IMO, I like lighter colors like the OM6. Easier to read labels
than on the black panels.
. Orange Dot ;-)
. I'm sure there are some needs for the guys working digital modes,
but I will let them define that.
I think the "modular" is important.
People can buy and pay for the options the like and need.
Also, people can buy a base model earlier, and expand over a year or two.
