I did not see any mention of usb in Bob's message. Did I miss something?
In any case, when using a usb/serial adapter there are a few things to
remember. Windows will not assign a (virtual) com port number to a usb port
until a usb device is plugged in and recognized by Windows. That could be
why you see the delay, John. Also, if you plug the same usb device into a
different usb port Windows may assign it an entirely different com port
number. Look in Windows Device Manager to see what Windows is doing with
the com ports. While in Device Manager be sure to disable any Windows
power-down options for the usb ports you're using.

Bob,
"I have a new cable...."......some of the Chinese made Serial to USB cables
do not work with newer versions of PC operating system. Are all the 'new'
cables the same? Did you try the original cable?
I have also found that Windows sometimes delays sending the right COM Port
to the software. Last time it took me 30 minutes of unplugging and plugging
in the cables to get the correct Com Port to show up as being an option.
Good luck, it can be frustrating.

Bob, do you have a COM port? if not use a COM Port to USB cable. set the
connection speed to whatever COM port you get HRD to recognize, Baud rate to
57600, Data bits 8, Parity NONE, Stop bits 2, RTS PTT, DTR to CW if you wish
to do CW.
when you open the connection setup and search for the right COM port
(whether using a REAL or assigned COM port for the serial to USB cable) HRD
should offer you some indication of what COM ports you really have. in my
case using my software there is an asterisks beside the ACTIVE COM Ports.
in my case I have a real COM port and a serial to USB cable for connecting
my Orions to the computer. the serial to USB cables read my Orions. one
Orion is keyed CW by serial to USB cable and the other is keyed by the real
COM 1 port.
the BAUD rate setting is CRITICAL!
