Richards,
I almost agree with Al's comments. I have both a black/blue and gray/green
Jupiter and
have mixed opinions on the screen. I don't prefer the blue screen enough to
spend the
money to upgrade my green screen.
My Jupiters have the CW keyboard/CW reader upgrade and I never use it even
though CW
and data are all I do these days. Nothing wrong with them, just no compelling
desire to use
them. Money I should have kept in the kitty.
There are two factory approved modifications to the older (read earlier
gray/green) Jupiters
that I performed. (this also applies to the Pegasus)
1 - Removed a resistor in the audio chain to increase the available audio
and....
2 - Replaced a 1uF capacitor with a 2.2 uF capacitor to improve the ALC action
on SSB
transmit.
Those two mods involve working on circuit boards with which you may be
comfortable or
maybe not.
Neither of the above mods are really necessary, just tweaks for most cases.
In my case the
resistor mod is quite useful as I am nearly deaf and the increased audio is
helpful.
According to their web site, Ten-Tec still sells the autotuner for the Jupiter.
If you are not
comfortable getting inside the radio with a soldering iron I'm sure TT would be
happy to install
the 'tuner and at the same time do the two mods mentioned.
Of course....all of my suggestions may already be in place in the radio you are
getting. :-)
Have fun.
I have an up-to-date Orion classic and I use my Jupiter or Pegasus most of the
time. Very
nicely balanced radios in my opinion.
