Agreed -- This probably isn't as bad as even a very-low end lightning event
(what the lightning people call a "streamer"). I experienced one of those with
an O II (the one tested by the League) and it was, well, Bad. On the "good
news"
side, it's unlikely that the rx front end presented a good match to the amp
output, so it's also unlikely that a full kW made it in. But, enough certainly
did make it in that this will be a non-trivial job. Not hopeless by any means,
but something that must be taken on with significant determination.

I think this is a good assessment of the situation, except the damage is
probably not quite as spread out and unpredictable as it would be with a
lightning strike. It is certainly not hopeless. If a full kW was
delivered to the antenna port of the Omni VI I would expect all of the
BPF switching diodes to be toast, as well as the drivers that drive
those diodes. Some toasty BPF inductors and capacitors too. But, maybe
no damage to the other circuitry further from the front end and first
mixer. With a lightning strike the damage could be anywhere.
Find out what still works. Can you inject a signal into the 9 MHz IF and
get audio out? Does TX power come out? If not does the low level driver
produce anything? If you can get this radio to work, you are going to
learn a lot about it in the process. I think it is a worthwhile endeavor.
