I'd dig around a bit before I'd to that.

paul didn't say if it transmitted but let's assume it does.

and that would mean the mixer and frequency control circuits are active.  The 
tx and rx use the same filter so that part of the radio is working.

any noise from the speaker/phones? 

inoperative how? Won't change freq? No white noise? does the audio change when 
you change mode? 

without looking I'd start by looking at the first mixer 'cause even if the amp 
took out the front end, you'd still be able to hear something, although it 
would need to be strong.

could be an interesting project.
