Shawn, If the diode is in shunt from plus to minus, and a reversed polarity plug in is done, the diode bypasses the current, if the cathode was installed toward the normally positive power connector pin. Then, if there is a fuse ahead of that diode, it opens and the radio components are saved. No drop due to the diode.
