Thanks for the update on sandy soils/ FL halo grounds.
Yes, here we have a combination of limestone soils, and large boulders
just under the surface that make driving a rod a coin toss unless you
have ground penetrating radar to find a spot!
We use a rod when we can, but I have heard of some locations where the
rod is laid horizontally as deep as they can dig, around rocks.
Then, here at my work, if you want a ground rod, you have to drill a
correct size hole to have a tight fit on the rod, in the soft limestone
18 inches down. We are on the edge of what had been a quarry site.
Eventually, a halo ground was added with a lightning rod system after
several hits on the flat roof.
