Jim, even the BMW mechanics can't keep one running without the computerized
test equipment which is beyond their means to buy.

I have a '37 Packard and the only electronics that could fail is the philco
radio. If we ever have an EMP I will be one of the few that can still drive!
To add a bit to the discussion of obsolete parts, the guru's of the BMW club
keep saying that the only people that should own an out of warranty seven
series
are BMW mechanics. I think the same can be said of the micro loaded
transceivers
but even the best technician can't fix these if the parts are not available.

I suppose we can find some irony in this. Transceivers constructed
pre-digital (displays, control, DSP, etc) likely have better longevity than
those built afterwards. New chips are born quickly -- and die quickly. But
consider any Collins, Hallicrafters, or Drake gear. With minimal effort,
one can find replacement parts -- many of which are better than the
originals. For example, Sprague Orange Drops or yellow-jacked Polypropylene
in place of black beauty caps. Also, carbon film resistors in place of
carbon composition. So, if I had to keep only one set of equipment working,
I would gravitate toward pre-1980s equipment.
