Roger, I feel that this discussion on this reflector is, well,
uncomfortable and downright " backsliding" except that TT did have a
great automatic/memory tuner that I would like to have. Also rumor has it
that LDG's work was in some of TT tuners (I do not know if that is true).
So, confesions of infidelity are here.
I went for the LDG 200 Pro (The one that will handle up to 150 Watts.) It
has ports for two antennas. To me it is much better than sliced bread,
basically because it is the whole loaf! 16K of memories - 8k for each
port and then 2k for 4 different antennas on a port. This is mind
relaxing b/c you will never run out of combinations, but, if you do, you
can erase the whole bank and start over.
Some folks complain about the clicking of relays (I love to hear that its
is working out all of those combinations) or the idea that you should
reduce power to about 20 watts while tuning (as though you should not
worry about QRM) to reduce stress on the contacts.
For those who are tinker-compelled you can override the automatic part and
force different Cpacitance and inductance combinations - been there done
that. The LDG approach is so hand free that all you need to is apply a
little power for a short time and your rig will show you that the SWR is
settled and gthen up the power. The LDG does not have to be insight at
all - trunk of car? Outside at the base of the ANT (weather proof box
please. It is very small too. Of course it is nice to have in sight if
you like LEDS flickering to show pwr out, but once tuned the SWR bars do
not flicker.
My comparison tuners are the DRAKE MN4-C, MN4 and MN-2000 plus a MFJ - as
I said, I have not been able to find the TT autotuner. So I have had
years of hands on tweeking - fun but nothing like the magic of the LDG
approach.
