Exactly. We (on average) devote a smaller percentage of our income to energy 
and food, and for many, even housing, than we did 40 years ago. THis is what 
has allowed us to expand consumption in other areas.

Interesting thread. Actually, since 1973, the real incomes
of Americans, and others, has dropped relative to inflation.
Were it not for advances in technology, and offshore production,
the costs would be higher.
