I totally agree with Andre, my OII was my 70th birthday present to me and I find the radio a benchmark for all other AR radios. The RX's are fantastic. Originally set up with 2.039d I experimented with the other versions that were available, they were interesting but not the whole deal. I find the current version, since John Henry returned to be a good replacement for 2.039d. Yes some mod's could be made but this is a personal thing. I don't have a personal programmer to modify the software to my personal needs. My QTH is in a reasonably quiet area so I have little need of the NR,NB etc, maybe this will change when 'Ol Sol gets out of bed. If you don't like your OII, send her over here I'm sure I could find another job for it.

Hello all,
i am an satisfied ORION II user. I have had many trouble to understand and
to use my OII. But after two years of learning I don´t wan´t to have an
other TRX. A long time I was "fan" of japaneise Transceivers. They looking
so nice, but thats not all. OK. the building quality of the OII is not the
best, especiality the tuning knobs and the display is not so good, comparing
with Icom TRX ore so. The receiver performance is the important think for me
and there is the OII the number one for me. I think the japaneise companies
have learned from TEN TEC especially with roofing filters and so on. I think
we don´t need an ORION III. What we need is a stable software fore the OII
and more updates to remove all the problems.

T-T had a display fast enough to be really useful as an operating aid.
It
was the waterfall display in 2.041XT. Yes, it looked kinda washed out on
SSB, but I'm mainly a CW op and it was a real help. It was about twice
as
fast as the spectrum sweep display in 2.044A. John Henry said that
they're
working on a new version, which I'm eagerly awaiting. Meanwhile, the
sweep display in 2.044A is definitely an improvement over 2.039d.

I don't think we need an Orion III, just more work on the O II firmware.
Keep up the good work, John. It's helping.

I will acknowledge that the sweep is slow . I think the sweep should
be better than the other guys . I use the sweep and when I operate at a
different qth I find myself looking for it . I am looking foreword to
the whole package coming together in the Orion III . I am getting bored
with this Old Orion II give us some good news TT and tell us you are
working on a new radio to replace the Orion . John kb2huk

Ah, Yes, will the Orion III have a separate 32bit DSP receiver for the
sweep, Wahoo how important is that ? Will it have a second receiver of
the
same quality as the main receiver ? Wahoo, how important is that ? I,
alas,
use 2.039d and am thrilled with it so far, but I don't use the dumb
sweep at
all. Can probably count on two hands the times I have used the second
receiver!

It may be subjective, but I like the NR in 2.044A a lot better than the
one
in 2.039d. The sweep display seems faster too, which makes it more
useful. Or, am I just imagining it?

I am running version 2.039d on my Orion II.

I am wondering if the latest 2.44 firmware offers any real
enhancements
over 2.039d. I wonder if it is worth the time, hassle and possible
trade-offs to upgrade to 2.44. It is a larger project here in that
for
security
reasons my shop does not run Windows so I have more work to get and
run
the
 upgrade.

Thanks for any insight.
