I own five 229/238 tuners, and regularly run a Titan at 1.2-1.4kW into them.
One or two of the fixed capacitors will release smoke after a long period of
contest operation. Once I've replaced them with higher rated parts, they
don't do it again. Yes, they are pretty robust tuners, and I like them a lot.
I guess that the fact that I own five should tell you that. :)
$275 is the right price for a 229A. The differences between the 229 and 238
are cosmetic. The NEWEST versions of these tuners replace the dial cord with
a vernier tuning dial. The dial cord is a PITA, so that's a very worthwhile
design change. I haven't seen one of the new ones, so don't know about any
other differences.
