The Omni VI is far easier to master than, as an example, a Yaesu FT 450
which is considered an entry-level rig. It also has much better ears, fewer
knobs, menu items that only need to be set once and a robust final output
amp.
Probably the biggest thing to learn is where to set the LP cut-off depending
on where you set your CW BFO, and what limitations the 9mhz filters may or
may not put on that offset.
It's also pretty darned stable and not like a Jaguar that needs some
constant, little attending...the things that make older rigs endearing to
those who love them.
So for $1000 to $1300 he can have one of the ten or so best receivers out
there without menu items and the need to refer to a manual every ten minutes
or so.

I second your thought on this subject Geoff. Depending on the age of the
person, us older folks seem to adapt better to the analog gadgets. After
all, that's what we were brought up with. I have graduated to a SDR radio
but the learning curve is much steeper. An older Omni series 545 thru 546C
or Corsair 560/561 along with the Triton would be a great starter for a
newbie.
Just my 2 cents worth.
