What's the battery voltage under load (e.g. power off)?
When's the last time the battery was replaced?
Might be time for a new battery.
Might be a problem with the power supply to the microprocessor, a bit
low or a bit bad bypass (electrolytic or tantalum) causing it to misread
ROM and go wild. The radio is old enough to have battery and
electrolytic capacitor problems. I have an Yaesu FT-726 doing similar
odd things and I know its battery is going on 20 years old.
