John, You did not specify which model Shure mic. Most of the live sound
style mics have the element shorted for mute when the slide switch is off.
Now if you are using a communications mic such as a 444 that is different.
the 705 has two switches. The switch on top of the stand has a lock on
position. I always leave mine is "VOX position". Regards, Bob
