Could this be a DSP noise blanker or noise reduction induced distortion?
The O-II (depending on the DSP version) can exhibit some audio distortion
from the digital signal processing if NB and or NR is enabled.

Not only that, but an SSB contester might never care to listen to a signal
any wider than 1.8 kHz and put such a filter in the wide position on
purpose, as I have done. I don't care a darn about "lows" in SSB signals I
receive, and in fact filter them out anyway, in post-IF filters. This gives

me better selectivity, and an enhanced ability to understand the speech, in
a hostile audio environment. If I want nice audio, I go in the living room
and listen to my stereo (grin).
