[TenTec] Omni VI qustion...Notch Filter

I have a 'new-to-me' Omni VI, Fac III option. I don't yet have a manual, but 
one is on the way. Can someone explain to me in simple terms how and when to 
use the Notch Filter on Auto and Manual? When I turn the outer Notch dial on 
manual, on a given cw signal, nothing happens. When I place the Notch on Auto, 
(the light comes on), it makes the signal 'thump' and become unreadable. I have 
a full complement of cw filters.
