Having been back and forth with Sevierville, I finally asked them to ship
the dead radio to a local guy here in Florida for the last, Last Rites. He
only does foreign brands but took pity on an old man and agreed to take a
look. I gave him Dr. Johnson's advice, buttressed by other comments on this
board, to eyeball the solder joints. (I am too old and shaky for such an
endeavor) Given enough spare time "Mirabile dictu" the rig lit up and
started playing. Several bad solder joints and new DSP chips, I suspect
unrelated to the underlying problem, and away we go! Meantime, I picked up a
cherry Yaesu FT-990. Neat radio.
Thanks to all who offered comments and sympathy
