Paul, I know you've gotten a lot of good advice about verticals. Here's a completely different suggestion. Put up a horizontal doublet, feed it with open wire or ladder line, and match it with an "antenna tuner." The length of the doublet is not critical. Something 67 feet long will work on all bands from 80 through 10 meters. Double that length will work on 160 as well. Toss some rope up into the tallest trees you can find, or hang it from the roof of your house. Higher is better, but even 30 feet up will get you on the air quite handily.
